Jersey No. 3

The Tradition

First worn by Anthony Papio in 2015 and again in 2016, the No. 3 was to be worn by a position player who personified the three pillars of Maryland Baseball: Approach, Toughness, and Intensity.

Today, the No. 3 can be worn by either a position player or a pitcher and embodies the three current program pillars established by Coach Rob Vaughn and his staff in 2018: Ownership, Toughness, and Growth Mindset. It is this foundational system that all players must adopt and practice. However, it is the inherent leadership of the player donning the No. 3 jersey that teaches by example. No. 3 is worn by the player that defines the “Standard” and holds himself and his teammates to that “Standard.” His work ethic is relentless and he is the personification of what it looks like to play baseball at the University of Maryland.
